Overview

Nasonex Nasal Spray (mometasone furoate monohydrate) is a steroid used to treat nasal symptoms such as congestion, sneezing, and runny nose caused by seasonal or year-round allergies. Nasonex Nasal Spray is also used to treat nasal polyps in adults.
It may take up to 2 weeks of using this medicine before your symptoms improve. For best results, keep using the medication as directed. Talk with your doctor if your symptoms do not improve after a week of treatment.
Mometasone can lower the blood cells that help your body fight infections. Avoid being near people who are sick or have infections. Call your doctor for preventive treatment if you are exposed to chicken pox or measles. These conditions can be serious or even fatal in people who are using Nasonex.

Active Ingredients

Nasonex Nasal Spray contains active ingredient mometasone furoate, one of a group of medicines called corticosteroids. When mometasone furoate is sprayed into the nose, it can help to relieve inflammation (swelling and irritation of the nose), sneezing, itching and a blocked up or runny nose.

Indications to use

NASONEX Nasal Spray is a man-made (synthetic) corticosteroid medicine that is used to:

  • treat the nasal symptoms of seasonal and year-round allergic rhinitis (inflammation of the lining of the nose) in adults and children 2 years of age and older.
  • treat nasal congestion that happens with seasonal allergic rhinitis in adults and children 2 years of age and older.
  • prevent nasal symptoms of seasonal allergic rhinitis in people 12 years of age and older.
  • treat nasal polyps in people 18 years and older.

Contraindications

Do not use NASONEX if if you are allergic (hypersensitive) to mometasone furoate or any of the other ingredients of this medicine.

Side effects

Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.
Immediate hypersensitivity (allergic) reactions may occur after use of this product. You should stop taking Nasonex and get immediate medical help if you experience symptoms such as:

  • swollen face, tongue or pharynx
  • trouble swallowing
  • hives
  • wheezing or trouble breathing

When corticosteroid nasal sprays are used at high doses for long periods of time, side effects may occur due to the drug being absorbed in the body.
