Nasonex can be used to treat symptoms of seasonal allergic rhinitis (hay fever) and perennial rhinitis, both of which are hypersensitivity reactions occurring when a ‘trigger’ is inhaled. Hay fever occurs seasonally, at the time of year when different pollens from trees and plants, and spores from fungi are present in the atmosphere. Perennial rhinitis, however, occurs all year round, triggered by other materials such as animal fur, house dust mite, feathers, and foods.
Nasonex is a nasal spray, containing an active ingredient called mometasone furoate. Mometasone furoate belongs to the corticosteroid class of medicines, which are anti-inflammatory agents. These agents act by reducing the swelling in your nose, and thus relieves itching, sneezing, and a runny or congested nose. Nasonex may also be used for nasal polyps, small growths that occur in the nostrils that can affect your breathing. By reducing inflammation in the nose, the polyps shrink, so alleviating the feeling that your nose is blocked.
